Pismo Beach History

We know of the area as Pismo Beach today was first inhabited by the Chumash Native American people at least 9,000 years ago. In 1769, the first Europeans made their way to the area. Pismo Beach is located in an area known as Rancho Pismo, granted to Jose Ortega in 1840. Later, a man named Issac Sparks acquired the land.

The Pismo Beach area passed through several sets of hands throughout the next 40 years or so, and by 1886, John Michael Price was heavily involved. Price attempted to start a community here in Pismo Beach in 1875 by building a hotel. However, it wasn’t a success in its first location and had to be relocated. Eventually, the town of Pismo Beach was officially incorporated until 1939. It was actually disincorporated in 1940 and was reincorporated in 1946, making the city 75 years old as of 2021.

Hearst Castle

Now that you know a little of the local history, you’ll want to know the most interesting Pismo Beach things to do to make that history come to life! About an hour away from Pismo Beach in the town of San Simeon, you’ll find Hurst Castle. This incredible estate dates back to George Hearst, a businessman, and politician who purchased the land in the 1860s. In 1919, his son William Randolph Hearst (of journalism fame) purchased additional land and began constructing his retreat.

Hearst had to leave in 1947 because of his failing health. Even though the castle wasn’t finished, it already held a whopping 165 rooms and 123 acres of outdoor space! Today, guests can come to see the incredible art collection, stroll through the serene gardens, and learn about the fascinating people who brought this attraction to life.

Hearst Castle is located at 750 Hearst Castle Road in San Simeon.

Margo Dodd Park

Right here in Pismo Beach lies Margo Dodd Park, a breathtaking green space that’s popular for local weddings! Many locals and visitors alike enjoy spending their days here soaking up the sunshine, relaxing on the lawn with their loved ones, and taking in the simply amazing view of the ocean. Since it’s so conveniently located near other attractions in Pismo Beach, it’s the perfect place to take a break in the middle of the day.

You also won’t want to miss Dinosaur Caves Park right next door, where it will feel like you’ve truly stepped into history! A giant dinosaur was constructed here in the 1940s. Although the original dinosaur has been removed, it’s still an incredible place to experience while you’re in town. And don’t worry; new dinosaur sculptures have been added!

Margo Dodd Park is located at Ocean Boulevard and Pier Street in Pismo Beach.

Point San Luis Lighthouse

Travel just 10 minutes away to the town of Avila Beach to experience the beauty of Point San Luis Lighthouse. This landmark stands out as being the sole Victorian model lighthouse that still remains on the West Coast! President Andrew Johnson first recognized the need for a lighthouse in this area in 1867, and the very next year, the first bill for its construction was introduced (though it wouldn’t get passed until 1886).

Point San Luis Lighthouse has been standing since the summer of 1890. It was decommissioned in 1974 but still stands as a proud landmark of this area. There are frequent tours that take guests into the lighthouse and around the grounds, helping to bring history to life. Plus, the ocean view is so picturesque, you simply have to see it to believe it!

Point San Luis Lighthouse is located at 1 Lighthouse Road in Avila Beach.

Price Historical Park

Price Historical Park is a gorgeous space located right here in Pismo Beach. The area gets its name from Pismo Beach founder John Michael Price, who constructed the Price Anniversary House right here on the grounds (and the gated Meherin House nearby). Throughout the park, you’ll find historical elements dating all the way back to the times of the Chumash Native Americans who once lived here.

In addition to the historical elements, there’s plenty of activity to be had here as well. This four-acre park has stunning hiking trails, a class 1 bike trail, and plenty of open space to explore. It’s no wonder this is one of the most popular places to enjoy the outdoors here in Pismo Beach! When in town with a large group of people, you can even schedule a tour of Price Historical Park, where an experienced guide will let you in on all the fascinating secrets of the area’s past.

Price Historical Park is located at 100 Rancho Pismo Drive in Pismo Beach.
