Your Guide to Pismo Beach State Park

Pismo Beach, California, is one of the best vacation destinations along the Pacific coast. Whether you are visiting with your sweetheart or the whole extended family, you’ll find plenty of activities to help you make unforgettable memories. There are countless things to do in Pismo Beach, but of all the things to do, Pismo Beach State Park is simply not to be missed. Here’s everything you need to know before you go.

About

The history of Pismo Beach State Park goes all the way back to the Chumash Indians, who occupied the area for thousands of years. In 1769, a Spanish expedition came through the dunes and found native black bears and grizzly bears. In the 1930s, the dunes were mainly occupied by a primitive settlement called the Dunites, who stayed in the area until the last Dunite died in 1974.

Things to Do

Today, Pismo Beach State Park remains an incredible destination all year round. Many visitors come to experience the stunning wildlife of California, including rare bird species, fantastic fishing opportunities, and breathtaking western Monarch butterflies from November through February. You’ll also find plenty of other outdoor activities, including surfing, swimming, walking trails, and more. Take advantage of the visitor center and the free educational programs to make the most of your visit.

Fishing at Pismo Beach

One of the most popular things to do at Pismo Beach State Park is fish. If you’re interested in freshwater fishing, you can find it at the Oceano Lagoon behind the visitor center and the campground. There is an ADA accessible fishing platform so that everyone can get involved. Surf fishing is also available all along the shoreline.

If you opt for surf fishing, you will need a fishing license.

Freshwater fishing on Pismo Beach presents an excellent opportunity to catch a variety of species. You’ll find several varieties of trout including Brook, Brown, California Golden, McCloud River Redband, and more. Striped bass and black bass are also highly present along the fresh waters of California.

Finally, try your hand at fishing for the famous Pismo clams. You’ll quickly discover why, in 1947, Pismo Beach called itself the clam capital of the world! You can go clamming half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset, but you must have a fishing license and an accurate measuring device. Clammers are only allowed to possess clams at least 4.5 inches in length. If you claim an undersized clam, it must be immediately reburied in the area where it was dug.
