San Luis Obispo Botanical Gardens

The San Luis Obispo Botanical Gardens will unite your family as you experience nature like no other. The gardens strive to educate and inspire people to embrace and celebrate nature! There are outdoor recreational activities along with several monthly community interactions that showcase the beauty of the gardens.

San Luis Obispo Botanical Gardens are located near the Pacific Ocean on the Central Coast of California! The Central Coast is an area you will not want the family to miss! The 150-acre garden is devoted to the five Mediterranean climate ecosystems in the world. In 1989, the gardens at SLO were originated by Eve Vigil, a student in Ornamental Horticulture at California Polytechnic State University! By 1993, a 150-acre parcel in El Chorro Regional Park was chosen for the garden site.

The grand opening took place in 1997 and is still standing strong today! There are many variations of gardens featured at SLO Botanical Gardens! Enjoy the Discovery Hike, which is a fun family adventure over one mile long. Along the way, you will discover local animals, flowers, and volcanoes with epic views! There is The Children’s Garden which is a safe place for kids of all ages to learn about wildlife. The garden features exploration and encourages kids to understand the importance of resources and their usage. With education and family opportunities, the San Luis Obispo Botanical Gardens are not something you want to miss!

Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove

The Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove is a must-see for the whole family! This beautiful grove is one of five sites in the state that counts over 10,000 butterflies a year. The Monarch Butterflies flock yearly to the shores of Pismo Beach to seek shelter from freezing northern winters.

The grove is located just a mile south of Pismo Beach and is open from late October all the way through the month of February. While visiting the Central Coast, another family attraction is the Leaning Pine Arboretum. This attraction is open year-round and is a free and fun place to spend time with the family! Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is known for its hands-on approach to learning. This garden has been maintained and built by students.

The Arboretum represents many class projects and learning exercises from previous students. The Leaning Pine Arboretum has focused on the world’s five Mediterranean climate regions. There are several gardens to explore and much to learn! This Arboretum is perfect for taking walks, learning about new plant species, and educating the entire family! The Leaning Pine Arboretum is known for being a garden for education, ease, research, and relaxation. Surround your whole group with a positive and peaceful environment that is sure to make for some beautiful family photos.

Lake Park Native Garden

A garden that is a popular stop for many families is the Lake Park Native Garden. This garden was planted in the early ’90s. The purpose of this garden was to give the public opportunities to observe native plants that do well in temperature extremes. This garden was recently renovated in 2016-2017. This Pismo Beach attraction is sure to be filled with much of the San Luis Obispo community! Not only is this garden beautiful and a great spot for the family, but the ANTA (Atascadero Native Tree Association) is heavily involved in keeping the garden at its peak.

The ANTA has planted thousands of native trees and shrubs in the City of Atascadero. Volunteer efforts from organizations such as Kiwanis and Lions Club completed the planting projects. ANTA is a great organization for the whole family to learn about! They do great things for the environment.

Nipomo Native Garden

Another Pismo Beach must-see is the Nipomo Native Garden. This garden is a twelve-acre site located in the community of Nipomo, California! This garden is great for the whole crew because it is a non-profit organization that provides restoration and recreation of the Nipomo Mesa Guadalupe Dunes complex! The plants are organized to illustrate a community of serenity and the unique characteristics of each plant’s environment.
